Christy & Valerie Moore bought Eco House, Ahakista, Bantry in 1997. They had first seen the house when it referenced in an RTE programme by Duncan Stewart. It also featured in the book “Earth to Spirit” by David Pearson who travelled the world seeking unique dwelling houses. Eco House was designed by Paul Leech and was awarded a Construction Excellence Award in 1995 by the European Building magazine.

Designed to blend into the hills of West Cork this trefoil or Y-shape house both embodies vernacular tradition and modern architectural design. Its main materials are local stone for the walls, timber for windows and part of the interior and slate for the roof. Leech wanted the stone to be colourful rather than dull and it has beautiful earthy rustic colours in it. It is also influenced by Sir Edwin Lutyens, an architect greatly admired by Leech for his house and garden rapport for Gertrude Jeckyl. Like the house at Ahakista it has a rustic look and was designed so it would be authentic. Lutyens worked with Jeckyl on hundreds of garden designs. The slate used on the roof is typical of that used in the region. It was constructed before the invention of ecological cement so concrete is used in the foundations. There is an example of classical style stucco work around the windows and doors like that seen at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham built in 1680 now known as Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). The external form of the front porch is similar to church architecture with an example being the nave of St. Patrick’s, Jordonstown, Co. Antrim by William Henry Lynn built between 1865 and 1868. The porch of the house is like a modern take on this shape with elongated windows which frame the external landscape As the original owner wanted the house to be low-impact on its surrounding environment, she embraced the Japanese ideals of Feng Shui. Externally this house also has a rainwater swimming pool which is simply built over an old mobile home slab. In summer heat from the house can be used to heat the water in the pool and in winter the heat pump works from the water. Inside the house is completely open plan making use of every inch of space. Heat pumps are incorporated into many of Leech’s houses. The current owner is replacing the fireplace with a Clearview woodchip burner which is more eco-friendly. The Trombe wall which also doubles as a chimney is reminisant of the old Irish stone round towers built from the tenth to twelfth centuries. ‘Trombe wall- ‘a glass-fronted exterior masonry wall that absorbs solar heat for radiation into a building’. The idea of a Trombe wall originated in the nineteenth century and was popularised by engineer Felix Trombe in the mid-twentieth century as a wall which could also function as a solar thermal collector. Other examples of Trombe walls can be seen later in this chapter.
