West Cork Property, Bantry

As a unit of the West Cork Property scene, Bantry is always an interesting case in point because it displays a number of features that you don’t always find in other towns in the area.

For a start, Bantry’s physical position and layout have a very important impact on the property scene. Many would say that the layout and position of Bantry are very nice and I, for one would agree. But it’s also true to say that the very things which make the place so charming are also the ones that limit the natural development of the town. One look at this aerial photo of Bantry gives a clear idea (Our offices are circled in red, by the way) of what I’m talking about.

Notice how, from the air, the town has a bit of a “narrow waistline”, almost as though it’s in the shape of a bone. This is because of the hills that rise on virtually all sides of the town, which physically hinder the town’s growth. In fact, the only side of the town on which there aren’t any hills in the side on which the Atlantic is on, and there are no current plans for any further reclamation of the sea!

The upshot of all of this is that the rarity of property development in a town the size of Bantry and in a town as dynamic in economic growth as Bantry currently is, means that prices are at something of a premium for a place of its size. In Bantry, a semi-detached or terraced 3-bedroom house of modest proportions will get about €300,000. Compare this with a similar property in, for example Skibbereen.
