The World Cup – a Bantry Estate Agent’s View

It only comes around every 4 years, but for a Bantry estate agent, the World Cup can have a strange and varied effect on business.

The one of 4 years ago was a very different affair from our point of view, of course, because we were directly and very emotionally involved in the competition – this resulted in nervous behaviour, sleepless nights, being obliged to close the office for the duration of the afternoon matches, etc. So, whatever disruption there was came from within, as it were.

Now, Bantry estate agents are finding that there are some clear, if still rather small signs of a disruption to the normal patterns of the lively June market. These are emanating from the UK market, which is just that little bit quieter than it normally is at this time of year. It was recently reported in one of the main British newspapers that Britons are staying indoors a lot during this World Cup season: Pub sales are actually down, not up, and off-licence sales along with take-away sales are on the increase. This may change yet if England do progress to the more exciting stages, when more people will want to come out and follow their nation’s fortunes in a more communal way in the pub.

But for the moment, although it’s far from quiet, we anticipate that once the World Cup ends on July 9th next, the number of British buyers will increase accordingly.
