The Tin Pub & the Sheep’s Head
The Sheep’s Head Peninsula provides all visitors with unforgettable memories, such is its beauty and charm. If any of those memories are in any way fuzzy, then it might have something to do with the great range of great pubs on the peninsula.
Situated midway along the peaceful promontory is one of the most distinctive pubs in Ireland. The Tin Pub is a legendary refreshment centre and centre of cultural excellence, what with its range of fine drinks from across Europe (including excellent stout) and regular music sessions. Its weloming facade whispers of relaxed times and the sloping ground from the public road that leads to its door invites you to slide in for one at least and away from the trials and tribulations of the modern world.
Stepping in the door feels like stepping back in time, which is how it should be in a good pub – in a real pub, and the back door leads through a marquee extension to the beautiful gardens behind. Unless the rain is coming down in large doses (which is a small minority of the time, despite Ireland’s reputation that suggests otherwise), it is impossible to resist taking a table in the open air. Before you lies the gorgeous vista of fishing boats and pleasure craft on Dunmanus Bay, with the backdrop of the Mizen Peninsula behind. Should you wish to stretch the legs in between sipping porter, there’s a beach on which to do so.
The amiable host Tom made the smooth transition from city to something else entirely some time ago – a move that obviously agrees with him, judging from the permanent relaxed smile on his face.
The permanent relaxation is hard to tear yourself away from, as many a visitor to the Tin Pub have discovered. Before embarking, it’s a good idea to check the programme of events by logging onto the events page on the Tin Pub’s website.
