The Sheep’s Head Peninsula – Choosing where to buy property

Over the years, many people new to the area and looking for property tend to gravitate towards the Bantry-Glengarriff area at the expense of the Sheep’s Head Peninsula.

From such clients’ initial research, it always seemed much more of a logical choice: Both Bantry and Glengarriff are on the N71. The N71 is the main business and tourist artery serving the area. It’s a national primary route, which means that it’s of a good standard and, you are allowed to drive up to 100kph on it (all other roads have a speed limit of 80kph). So, it’s easy to get you and convenient to use and it makes for easy access to Cork city and airport (the airport link is always of particular importance for anyone who’s coming from abroad).

In contrast, when people look at Durrus and the Sheep’s Head Peninsula on a map, it seems that it’s a very small village served by a slow and tiny road.

The tiny road, as it turns out, is quite wide and straight and has a lot less traffic on it. This makes it a very convenient road to use, belying the commonly help misconception. In addition, the road from Durrus to Bantry connects up with the N71, making a swift journey to Cork without having to pass through busy Bantry town. So, all told, journey time from Durrus to Cork airport is the same as that of the Glengarriff-Cork connection. There’s no difference. This might seem like a simple and logical explanation, and it is. But it’s amazing how difficult it is to persuade people that this is the case. Because the connection is busier and the road is officially bigger, people are convinced that it’s a faster link, but the point is easily proven with a scientific road test. I’ve done it myself; let it be known that the scientific proof is there.
