Rubbish in County Cork

Everybody likes a system that’s fair and transparent when it comes to taxation and paying for the facilities that we all benefit from.

Bin West CorkThe waste collection system in West Cork is as fair as can be. It works like this: You pay a standard yearly charge to have your waste collected and to be issued with a nice green bin with an orange lid. This is no ordinary bin, however. Embedded in the bin somewhere is a micro-chip with the owners vital information on it (ie. name and address). You put your waste into the bin and leave it out for collection as normal. When it is picked up on collection day by the huge bin lorry, it also weighs the rubbish in the bin. The clever on-board computer is already aware of the precise weight of the actual bin, you see, so it with its computer brain, it subtracts said weight from the overall weight to figure out that you have so many kg of rubbish. Back at headquarters in Clonakilty, they calculate how much money you have to pay according to how many kilos of rubbish you’re leaving out for collection and then you’re sent the bill, which is the fun part.

Anyway, all information about the pay-by-weight waste collection is available on their website, which is www.corcoco.ie
