Musical and Literate Interlude from Property Hunting in West Cork
I’m often asked about the different reasons that people come to West Cork to buy property. They are so varied that it is difficult to pin down a complete response, but the basic one is “because it’s beautiful”.
The type of people who end up coming here from different parts of our planet are almost as varied as the different people on the planet. For example, did you know that on the outskirts of Bantry, there is a professional recording studio run by a highly accomplished musician and record producer? Perhaps not. This is the website of Ceol Nua, which is involved in even more exciting projects, as you’ll see once you have a quick look at the site. The owner – Andy Reynolds – has worked with a whole host of well-known musical celebrities, covering a very broad range in tastes and genres. As you’ll see, he’s worked with a lot of very successful pop bands in Britain & France – household names. He also does ongoing work for the likes of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). And today, many talented people from all genres and musical types come to us studio to record. If you want to check out his virtuoso guitar-playing, go to the Bantry Bay in Bantry on a weekend night or anywhere else the Zimmer Twins are playing.
As another example of an occupation that you can follow as easily from the top of a mountain just as easily as you can from the middle of a huge metropolis, take the indexer. Well, at least that’s what I assume you call someone whose job it is to create an index at the back of a book. You know – when you are trying to find the recipe for Sardinian Spuds in your cook book, but you can’t find it. So, you go back to the index and look under “potatoes”, and it tells you on what page the recipe for Sardinian Spuds is and you need, therefore, not go off your head flicking through the book trying to locate the picture of the finished product. Well, in the process of selling a house in recent years, the owner mentioned that he had a business. Seeing no visible signs of a business, other than a few books and a telephone, I began to wonder just what sort of business he was operating (advice or stimulation over the phone were the first two categories that jumped into my head). When I finally plucked up the courage to ask him just what he did for a living, he revealed to me that he indexed books. Being just one of a very small number of such people in the Republic, he was having to turn away more work than he could take on. A computer can’t do it and you need a special sort of brain to be able to do it on a regular basis without going insane. He found, by accident, that he actually enjoyed it. It just goes to show how the digital revolution has decentralised – to some extent at least- the moving patterns of people in their search for places to work from.
